Clifton Ryan is a determined defensive tackle who often leads the defensive linemen in tackles. During his rookie season, Ryan played in all 16 games. He became the first Rams’ rookie to have 2.0 sacks in a game since Sean Gilbert, against the San Francisco 49ers.
At Michigan State, Ryan totaled 118 tackles (78 solo), 10.5 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, and 23 quarterback hurries. As a senior in 2006, he started all 12 games and notched 25 tackles and 4.0 sacks despite dealing with a calf strain during the season. He majored in kinesiology.
Ryan was an All-Midwest choice by SuperPrep, Prep Star and Prep Football Report at his alma mater, Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Michigan. He garnered first-team Class A All-State honors from the Detroit News as a senior and was a three-time All-Saginaw Valley Conference performer. Ryan, along with Pittsburgh Steeler LaMarr Woodley, hosts an annual free football camp for youth in their home town that focuses on improving football skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork skills. Woodley and Ryan also lead the Heroes For Kids celebrity golf outing, which has raised over $100,000 for Saginaw youth recreation programs.
