Pro Career:
Bowens recorded his first NFL sack when he tackled Drew Bledsoe during his rookie year. He played for four organizations in a little more than two months (GB, BUF, WAS, MIA) from August-October 2001 before spending six-plus seasons with the Dolphins. While in Miami he appeared in one postseason game during the 2001 season. In 2007 he became the first Jet to block a punt, recover the block and return it for a touchdown since Chris Burkett in 1991.
College Career:
David began his college career at Michigan, where he played for two seasons before transferring to Western Illinois in 1998. During his sophomore season at Michigan, Bowens set a school single-season record with 12 sacks. At Western Illinois he was a Division I-AA All-American, recording 134 tackles, 34 TFL, four FF and two FR. Bowens majored in accounting.
Personal:
Bowens played TE and HB at St. Mary’s High School in Michigan, and he lettered three times each in basketball and track. He is an avid bowler who carries a 221 average with a game high of 275. In 2005 he created “The David Bowens Foundation” to help kids who suffer from asthma and cystic fibrosis. He also helped raise more than $20,000 for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
